max tire size for a stock spare tire mount??

what is the maximum tire size that a stock spare tire mount will hold on a 97 TJ? Would 33's be too heavy?

would it be smart to get a cheap carrier? because i plan on getting a new bumper but dont have enough money for both bumper and carrier. could i get a better quality bumper and a little cheaper tire carrier of a different brand?

33 X 11.5 R15 or R16 (285/75R16) is to much, IMO.

I think that a 33 X 10.5 R15 is probably going to fit and would be safe in regard to strength. IMO

However, the ideal tire for a stock spare mount is the 33 X 9.5 R15 or the 32 X 10.5 R15.

i have to air down my stock gambler with 31-10.50 so it will fit, once i spin the lugs down a little, ill air it back up. its impossible to fit my stock wheel with this tire on with 26psi in it.

Get some longer rubber bumpers or extend the ones you have with rubber shims.

That will help some.

Ya know what? I have a Rubicon and maybe that's a different animal in regard to stock tire carrier. Mine isn't stock anymore, but when it was, it had the stock 31 X 10 tire on it just fine. I'm sure it would have fit a 32 X 10.5 just fine. It might have fit a 33 X 9.5, but I don't know for sure about that. It would almost fit the 33 X 11.5 I had.

Rubicons have different rubber bumpers, which I think allows one or two sizes larger tire on the stock tire carrier.

So maybe my size estimates in prior post are to optimistic for a non-Rubi TJ. Not sure. My info does work for a stock TJ Rubi though.
