Will you be stranded if your keyfob battery dies?

Will you be stranded if your keyfob battery dies?
(or if the keyfob malfunctions in some other way)?
my vehicle: 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee, 5.2liter, V8, 4x4
ps: because the "panic button" keeps getting pressed accidentally inside my pocket,
I have put the keyfob permanently inside the vehicle, hope that is safe? Of course the
physical key stays on my person.

As far as I know, '96-'98 US- spec. ZJs should disarm VTSS using the key in any of the doors. However, there seems to be conflicting info about this regarding the US- domestic versions.

I know my euro-spec. 5.9 ZJ (ZG) does NOT disarm the VTSS using the key in any of the locks, so if the keyfob malfunctions or battery dies the engine will only run for about two seconds and that's it.

the (US spec) Jeep will absolutely run without the FOB at all. 96-98 are not chip keys and there is not a chip in the fob either. as long as the correct key is in the ignition it will crank and run all day.

Yup, that ^^

From the factory, the key in any door lock will disarm the security system for the NA market. Fob not required for anything but convenience.

The key activated alarm disarm switches don't always work properly. Fortunately there are three switches, improving the odds of success.

I said from the factory for a reason. The switches break from abuse and so a lot of the used ZJís out there only have one door left that works.

You could of course fix that . . . but parts arenít really available.

So, I am putting a bunch of extra CR2016 batteries in the vehicle with the keyfob (and a small screwdriver for doing a battery swap).
Hopefully that will take care of me, fingers crossed.
Kinda makes me miss the simpler old days.
I wonder if the dealer can just simply DISABLE the alarm/security/keyfob junk.....

Id suggest making life easy on yourself. Arm the system and go around an unlock doors and see which if any doors disarm the system. If you can find at least 1 then I wouldnt worry too much. I have a fob but I dont carry it 1) because its the only one I have and its the original and 2) because I cant get it to save seat and mirror setting so it keeps messing them up and when the adjustment gears on the seat a spotty to begin with getting it back where you want can be.....troublesome.

I have never even owned a fob until now; so, it's all brand-new to me.
I did notice that one time I left the rear-window latch unlatched, and it started
flashing that red-light near the AC-air-intake (top of dashboard), and when I
inserted the key, it started honking.....
I pressed the 'panic' button to try to get it to stop, and it finally stopped honking.
Without the fob in the console, would I have been able to make the honking stop (and start
the engine)?

It usually turns off the alarm with one of the door/hatch locks. If not you have to pull the horn relay so your neighbors won't hate you.
