wife didn't check oil for a month while i was gone.

So my wife forgot to check the oil for a month while I was out of town.
I came back did my usual check of all fluids which I do weekly and I had no oil....
I discovered I have a rear main seal leak and immediately put 5 quarts oil and 1-quart magic mystery oil in and it seems a lot better. no knocking as far as I can tell but my question is this

Is there a way to tell if things are damaged beyond repair?

Only oil pressure and noises afaik.
If you see less pressure or new noises then you got some damage.

You could also do a compression test.

Oil analyst will also let you know. I do them on every new to me used vehicle I get. Well spent $20-25.

Thanks Rob

I'd pull an oil analysis on it as well as do a compression test.

It's a 4L. It can take it.

My question is how do you get the wife to check the oil? Mine doesn't even check the fuel gauge.

Ask the wife if she oil light came on ever? Might want to drain the existing oil and see if you see any obvious damage. Metallic particles/pieces etc... Since you added oil it may have diluted it.

I'd say this was a ploy to get rid of that jeep and get her into something new.

5+ quarts in how many miles? Normal is @1k miles per month, so your leaking 5quarts in a 1k miles??
.
FIX THE ISSUE.

Might want to check PCV/CCV system.

When I see the price of OEM I think aftermarket.
When I see the quality of aftermarket I think OEM.

That's not a leak, that's a waterfall.

That's 60 quarts a year..

How far/long was it driven low on oil?

6 quarts of oil in a month is a huge oil leak. It would usually leave a huge puddle on the driveway. Even if it was only leaking while the engine was running it would still be pretty obvious. Worth checking out the oil pressure sensor. I've had them fail so that they leak pretty badly.

On the 4.0 you can pull the oil pan and check the main and rod bearings pretty easily. Worth a look if was really 6 quarts low on oil, i.e. no oil.

Compression test is probably not going to tell you anything. Bearings will melt and fail long before the lack of cylinder wall lubrication causes ring seal to suffer. And you'll go deaf from the knocking before the added bearing clearance changes the compression enough to matter.

Oil pressure, new knocking or tapping sounds, visual check of the bearings. That's what I'd do and in that order. Tricky though because you can ruin one rod bearing and still have good oil pressure while the bad bearing ruins the rod and crank. And let's be honest the 4.0 isn't a quiet motor so a faint new tapping could be hard to hear. You'd want to listen for a knock or tap that goes away or comes back when you hit or let off the throttle.

I’m not blamin her, it happens we’ve had a leak for awhile but I’d been topping it off until I had the money to fix. But it was indeed a waterfall coming from main seal and up out of distributor cap.
I’m not sure what caused the small leak to accelerate but it’s fixed now.

Poor wifey. I do hold mine accountable for reporting noises and changes in operation. It's her ZJ anyways.

My better half is great at letting me know about noises, smells and odd ZJ behavior. Last week she mentioned a pulse under hard braking and today she got new Raybestos rotors up front ($45 shipped RA) and I am happy to report that the problem has been dealt with to her satisfaction.
