What to lube rear main seal with on 4.0

replacing rear main seal tonight and seems cake except I have read several different coatings for the upper block seal

EX:
hand soap
oil
oil one bottom lip RTV on upper to block portion
nothing at all
ETC????

I had only planned on using a small amount of rvt where the seals meet and at the upper block corners of the oil pan. Is this correct?

My jeep is an 04 so I also have the bearing cap truss / girdle. does that have a spefic torque? I read 80 pounds for the bearing cap.

What about the oil pan bolts

any tips from experts are always welcome!

Just finished mine on a 2000 XJ (2001 seal type). I used liquid soap on the top seal and was able to get it in without too much trouble. I also have the truss /girdle and 80 foot pounds like the bearing cap seemed like to much to me so I did less. I believe the oil pan bolts are 11 foot pounds.

I ended up breaking one of the truss / girdle studs according to what I read its suppose to be only 35 foot pounds. Have you driven much since you replaced the seal? I think mine is still leaking because it has not fully expanded. I have probably only put 30 miles on it. I don't see how I could have done it any better! Where did you get your seal? I have a feeling if my seal is still leaking its from a cheap seal.

Got mine at Napa Auto Parts for $35. I ended need two of them because I destroyed the first one getting it in :-) I've let it idle for 35 minutes or so and have put about 4 miles on it so far with no leaks. As its not my primary vehicle it wont see a lot of action until summer. I have seen several post of people who noticed the head gasket was leaking after main rear seal replacement (mine was bad).

hmmm looks like I'll have to buy some dye. I spray painted my inspection plate silver to get a better ideal of where the oil was leaking but it didn't help

Are you still seeing an oil leak from the rear main seal? I've now put about 100 miles on my Jeep since the seal change and have seen a small amount of fresh oil on the flywheel inspection cover.

I was getting some also but I have not been parking in the garage so not sure. I am running mobil synthetic 5w30 so i plan on a heavy oil next change. I thought my replacement job went well, but i didnt get the seal from the dealer so that could be the problem. I have read that is a must.
