After 4 hours and a couple of of Not Your Daddy's Root Beers, I got the engine pulled, again. It's a lot easier the second time.

Discovered that it's still pulling oil past the intake gaskets. Which means my damn manifold is warped. Crap. I guess I'll have to find time to pull it and get it to a machine shop.

Nope. Hughes airgap. I first noticed the oil consumption over the winter and then narrowed it down to the manifold gaskets or the valve seals. Pulled the manifold and it had definitely been pulling oil past the gaskets. Tried a few tricks to get it to seal, still a no-go. Tried a few more things, and now it's still burning oil.

Trimmed a little bit more off the front bumper. I don't think there is any chance of contact anymore as long as the sway bar is connected. Need to flex it out again with sway bar disconnected to see if I got enough to cover that as well.

You aren't the first person I've heard complaining that a Hughes product warped on them. Or the third for that matter.

This does not inspire confidence.

I need to write Lucas a letter... I used their assembly lube when I did my bottom end rebuild. My new oil pump was a dud. The assembly lube saved my crank and new bearings.

Got my ax15 today... I'm probably gonna go to the bone yard tomorrow to look for stuff. I'm hoping to find the stuff I need. I've spent the last several days doing a bit if research on interchange issues and putting together a project list. I'm nearly free of that darned auto transmission!
I'm hoping that this all goes smoothly. I still have to get a few things, but the biggest thing is the bellhousing and I'm hoping to find one off of a few possibilities out there in the yard now, that also aren't too hard to get to. It's been hot as heck here lately and it's been very demotivating as far as doing much outside. I need a lake to go jump in...
I texted a buddy of mine that sometimes hangs out with me and gives me a hand on a few projects, but he hasn't texted back, so it looks like this is gonna be a solo project again. I don't mind the work so much, but it's still nice to b.s. with a buddy while you wrench on something.

Idea! I'm gone paint the transmission and bellhousing when I install it. Do you guys have any suggestions on color? I'm leaning away from black, and anything too flashy, like red, yellow, orange and blue, but there is a very light silver/blue I kinda like, and it looks like it may be easy to see fluid leaks on. The other color I was considering is just plain old aluminum colored silver paint, but it's sometimes difficult to trace a leak, especially light pink, nearly clear ATF. Does anyone have any suggestions?

It's an Edelbrock manifold, shouldn't be any different in that sense than the carb-ed performer RPM airgap it's based on. Hughes just has Edelbrock cast a version with a Hughes logo and fuel injector bungs for them to re-sell. But it's otherwise no different.

It's quite possible it was never perfect to start with but just barely sealed for a while out of luck. It sets down into the motor fine, so it's probably just something minor with the mating faces (or the angle on them might be a hair off). Shouldn't be too hard for a machine shop to sort it out.

I'd just do whatever color you think will be easy to see leaks on. It's not like anyone's gonna really be seeing the transmission.

It's an aluminum case yeah? Just media blast it clean and call it done.

If you're dead set on paint and want to spot leaks, paint it white. Not that a manual transmission should have any leaks. There aren't a great deal of places they can leak from.

I'm still not convinced an AX15 is the best option for a swap here. It seems to me an NV3500 would be a better choice, given that they're more often available with V8 bellhousings. But godspeed anyway.
