Vic, wiring issue, stereo

When I open my driver door or turn on a dome light in our ZJ, the radio, stereo turns off. The VIC when plugged in kills the stereo, and the VIC is not working. I disconnected the VIC wire harness at the VIC so the stereo would work (my son's daily driver), since it won't work anyway (bought a new VIC and plugged it in and it would not work either). Any ideas?

Welcome to the forum.

Just keep the doors closed...

Note that the correct Factory Service Manual (FSM) is an essential tool for repair / maintenance of these vehicles. The wiring diagram pages are reasonably accurate in the FSM and will help with the troubleshooting / repair.

The audio can be killed by loss of power, loss of ground (less likely, because even if the black Faston stereo ground is lost, chassis ground would still be provided by the antenna wire), or loss of the Infinity Gold amplifier / antenna enable (stereo would still work, but power antenna would drop and audio would stop).

On my ZJ, my OEM stereo reached the point where it would drop / restore when hitting a bump, restored by a dash hand slap. It was retired to the trash heap and replaced w/ an aftermarket system.

The VIC is a common failure part. It is frequently repaired by disassembly and touching up all the solder joints. Ensure the wiring harness is providing proper power.

Thanks for the advice. I do have an aftermarket stereo installed. Where do I get the Factory OEM service manual? Thanks again.

Here is a really nice one.

Here is another.

Chances are that the aftermarket stereo is not the problem, and instead the vehicle wiring has become problematic.

There are others, including sets of manuals.

Here is an image showing a wiring diagram page from an ad.
