transfer case chain

1993 ZJ with awd can you change the chain with the transfer case in the vehicle?

I've heard of some folks doing it, but it's a heckuva a lot easier to do it out of the jeep and on a bench. There isn't much to pulling it out, it's only like 6 bolts.

But to be honest, if it's AWD, it's an NP249 tcase. Those have issues with their viscous couplers. If you're going to rebuild it, you'd be better off finding a used NP231 or NP242. That's what most folks do (I did when I had my ZJ). There is lots of info here in the ZJ tech forum, including a huge sticky thread specifically about this swap:
