tranny knocking sound while in P (park)
 
Hi guys,
i just rebuilt the tranny and i'm having this issue, video speaks for itself. when in park tranny just makes un ugly knocking sound.

is the Parking mechanism adjustable somehow?


fluid level is ok, 4 torque converter bolts are bolted correctly, starter motor is bolted correctly too.

any ideas?

Does the knock frequency change with engine RPM? Could be a flexplate bolt hitting something.

But it goes away when a gear is engaged? Are you the torque converter was fully seated in the transmission?

I agree, it sounds more like a flex plate or torque converter bolt hitting a tweaked separator plate.

it shifts perfectly, full manual is awesome.

and yes, the frequency increases with rpms.

Removed the plate, but the knocking sound is the same. P cable/leverage or something P related? Is it adjustable?

If I move the leverage just a bit from P to R without engaging R sound stops.

EDIT : CORRECTION, AFTER A TEST DRIVE IT'S DOING THIS ALWAYS EVERY GEAR

hi guys,
recap: after yesterday's lil test drive (let's say 2 miles, to the gas station and back) tranny it's now knocking in every gear.

noise is coming from the converter area, proved this with a stethoscope.
i can not hear it in the tranny pan, nor the engine oil pan.

and yes, it's rpms related. the more rpms the higher the frequency.

torque converter bolts are fine (there is no sign of hitting something).

what am i looking for? could be a faulty converter?

You absolutely should not be driving it without the full separator plate installed. Not just the little dust cover, but the full plate that goes behind the flex plate is what I am talking about. If that's not in there (people have forgotten, it's OK, we're all human) then the torque converter can be pushed into the pump too far and damage the pump. That is also what I was thinking something is hitting. It's pretty easy to tweak which can cause it to stick out.

It's the plate that goes behind the flex plate and between the engine block and the bellhousing. The link shows one for an XJ/AW4, but basically the same thing as the ZJ should have.

My 94 with the 4.0L and 42re absolutely had a separator plate in it. Torque converter bolts to flex plate, flex plate to crankshaft. While the separator plate isn't that thick (1/8") it does make a difference in pump engagement in the transmission when you change that spacing by 1/8". That last engagement of the torque converter isn't much more than 3/8".

yes, that's the setup on mine , which is why i was asking what plate i forgot.

issue remains, can't figure out where it's knocking and i'm really trying to not tear the car apart several times

Makes sense the V8 doesn't have it as the block is wider so there's less air gap to fill.

Nope, that's not how they go together.

Use OEM or OEM- quality parts only, assemble as instructed in FSM - if things don't align or work that way, you need to figure out what is wrong and fix it.
