roof rack

Has anyone made a roof rack that is designed to fit in the back with the seats down as a shelf, with legs so that it sits above the seats instead of directly on the seat itself? Also, how deep is a normal roof rack? Also, a picture of the mounting brackets for the roof rails would be much appreciated.

I have some cheapie 2 ft by 2 ft plastic shelves that I put in the back.
It makes getting to stuff a lot easier. They fit just right. whne they are in there I can still get my spare out without moving them.

Before we all go nuts here let's have some definitions:

Roof Racks - They go on the roof.

Interior Racks - They go inside the GC.

OK - go at it!!!

Exactly! I would like a multi-purpose rack, one that sits on the roof then can have legs easily attached or folded out to sit in the back as a shelf. So i would like to know some of the more popular measurements for a rack that still could be slid into the back. Mind you, I have no spare tire and when I get one it will be on the rack. Thank you for any help.

I guess not.

I've designed and am about to build 3 units that will fit in behind front seat. One will be behind back seat when seats are up. Other 2 will be sized to fit on back seats when folded down. Different sizes so one is size of each seat and will allow other side of seat to fold up and down. Their heigth will be below window level and will be strong enough to lay on. I will be able to use them as a bed when needed. The back one will have full extension drawers. Bottom drawer will be deep enough for tire to fit in. Areas on sides will have removable covers to access them. The 2 that set on back seats when folded will have side door and top access. They can be set on top of back one when seats are in use. I figure this way I will be able to secure everything I carry... all camping gear, 4x4 gear and parts, and whatever else I need when in the sticks. And when I have to travel a long distance to get somewhere, can put extra luggage on top of it too.

I've also designed a low wind resistant rack for the top by using 4 stock roof rack rails and mounting tubing on top of them lengthwise. This will give me a 38" x 72" rack.

NEED: adjustable upper front control arms, front track bar frame bracket for JKS/RE bar, adjustable rear track bar, Addco rear sway bar, winch

so if and when the dual rack is made .. Where will the spare then go.. If you had it on the rack. it would then have to be on the inside also

right it would be put inside with the rack for windresistance reasons (mpg).
