question about sound from 242 tfc

Hi i changed my 249 transfercase in my gc zj about 7 weeks ago, drove it for 7ish weeks on 4wd part time cuz my driveschaft was in the shop to be cut ( tock 7 weeks its crazy) anyway after putting in the driveshaft and driving the car in 2wd i get a new wierd transmission whining noice from the transfercase area. this sound dissapear if i put it in 4wd full time. the sound comes over 30 km/h and is constant maby abit louder with higher speeds. what can this be and should i be worried. the tranfercase age and mileage i dont know picked it up from the scrapyard from another zj witch had this swapped in from a 249.

i will this weekend change the oil in the case again because last owner ran gear oil and not aft+4. am i gonna have to do a full rebuild of the transfercase or is this sound normal for the 242 in 2wd?

Whining is most likely a bearing issue. 242 should be next to silent in 2wd, and not much more in 4wd.

Any oil works fine as long as it's thin enough. There's nothing internal that requires atf.

so ill have to take the case down and rebuild it.. or can i still drive with bad bearings until next spring when i get a job after school?
hopefully the thing dont just blow up on me XD, do u need any special tools to rebuild it? can u do it with it still in the car or do u need to have it out? i guess ill have to get a full kit for it.

awell hopefully it lasts about 5 more month without making any dmg to the case cuz i dont have the 2-300 usd to buy the rebuild.

I can buy one with 127,000 miles for $95 with a 90 day warranty. Why rebuild one when you have to spend more on the parts than buying one?

XD as polcapower mentioned im not in us, im in sweden eu so not that many jeeps here and the few ones that are here are going up in price, and a 242 from the scrapyard will cost you here about 250-500 usd i paid 1850 sek =215 usd for mine ( after i ordered it 4 more guys tried to get it )

so if i whanna keep it running i have to buy parts and fix it. but i hope i can drive it the short drives i only do about 10 km to and from train every day. awell the tfc will have wait till may when i start working.

Well we can't tell you how long the bearing will last but I'm going to guess the less it's driven the longer until failure

I’ve had good luck with the eBay rebuild kits. The bearings and seals are really pretty standard so the kits are just putting all the things you need in a box. The good ones will be the same or better bearings than you’d get from a normal parts house.
