Pros and Cons of the 1998 5.2L and 5.9L

I have been looking around on the forums for a while now to see what I could find out about the differences on the two V8s. I have not been able to find much other than the problems or trouble shooting from day to day. I was just wondering if the owners of either the 5.2 or the 5.9 could give me some incite on how they like their jeep. I have never had a V8 but I am looking at them now to buy within the next month. Thanks for all the help. It is much appreciated

I have the 5.2 and love it BUT, if I ever found a nice niner I would be on it like flies on a farm. Lol

5.2 is a legend but the 5.9 is basically the same motor.. if i ever found a 5.9 and got it i would be the happiest man in the world but there rare around here.. only seen 1 but multiple times. Im not a big fan of the plain white one.. i like darker colors.

I am working on finding a niner. I am looking at jeeps for sale from San Diego all the way up to San Francisco. Anyone know what the mpg's are for the 5.9 with and without a lift?

Thats what I was thinking. I have a 89 Cherokee with a 3" lift and 32" MTs and I get about 13-14 mpg. I was thinking about just doing a 2" BB so that I could at least get some 30" MT on it for some snow runs.

having had 2 5.9s and 2 5.2s id say id depends on what you want and NEED. the 5.2 is good but the 5.9 is a BEAST. it kills. the 5.9 is all power and is super fun. however the mileage of the 5.2 is better. and the power is decent. if daily driver id go with 5.2- if just killing hondas then go 5.9

So it just ranges how you drive the Jeep with the stock setup.. Some how with my 5.2 I get almost 23 On highway but 14 in town. And who said all old V8s are gas hogs

I am upgrading from my XJ that I have now. Mainly I am getting a ZJ so that I can have a closed in jeep (no doors on my XJ for the Summer time) for the Fall and Winter season, also want something with airbags. I hit a concrete wall going 45mph in my first XJ and didnt have airbags. I am finding 5.2s with low mileage and good condition for about 3000-4000 and the 5.9s for 4000-5000.

unlike the 5.9, the 5.2 CAN get decent mileage. hell it does better than the cherokee with 4.0 over the mountains out here.

If we were to take the mpgs out of the picture and just base it off the engine/tranny, would the 5.9L tranny be superior?

Arent the 5.9 and 5.2 Trannys the same?? I have no clue because we swapped a 5.2 tranny that went bad in a friends truck with 300000 miles on it with a 5.9 tranny that was in the same year truck so idk if its different in jeeps then trucks.
