Power steering toasted?

02 has 59k. I'm doing some maintenance and checked the PS fluid, it has a burnt smell. Steers ok, think I should just flush the fluid and see how she goes?

no atf+4....

Mopar®P/N 04883077 Hydraulic fluid / Power steering fluid (MS5931)

MS5931 IS THE ONLY FLUID THAT CAN BE USED FOR THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM. NO EXCEPTIONS!

Important note:
The factory fill power steering fluid for all 1999-2004 Grand Cherokees is a unique fluid, MS5931. ATF+4 (MS9602) should not be mixed or used as a “topping off” fluid on the Grand Cherokee WJ. All WJ models should be serviced using ONLY the special MS5931 fluid. ATF+4 is NOT an approved Power Steering Fluid and should never be used under any circumstances. Note that all fluids will darken in color with usage and fluid color is no longer an indication of fluid condition.

Accidently used off the shelf Power Steering fluid in my 99 Grand Cherokee 4.7L V8. Container says its OK for use with GM and Chrysler vehicles. Didn't do a 100% flush so its mixed with the old stuff. After a few hundred miles I noticed the pump is starting to make some noise. I assume its because I didn't specifically use MS5931 from Mopar. My question is, did I permanently damage the pump? If not, will it eventually damage the pump?

NO... Do NOT use ATF in a mopar PS pump. Ever.

Use Chrysler PS fluid or generic that meets Mopar standards.

One of the problems w/ the internet... unless the poster removes that post, it will be there for a long time... someone will read it and think it's OK to use ATF.
