p0601 error. Can i fix this myself?

Hello, I have a problem with my cherokee. I took it to inspection and failed for emmisions. They gave me a code of p0601. I did the onboard diagnostic check and came up with the same code. But that is showing to be an internal pcm error. Is there any way to reset this code without having to go to the dealership with it? The Jeep runs perfectly fine and I really see no reason why the check engine light would be on at all.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks, Ron

you can try un hooking the battery for 15-20 minutes and let the system fully discharge and see if that clears the code, it could be that once the code is gone the light will remain for a certian number of ignition cycles post code correction. if i remember that right the number is 100

Well, I disconnected the battery for 15 minutes and started it up and the check engine light was off yay. I turned it off and checked for the code. No code!! Great, well I later started the jeep again, and the light was back on. Checked for the code and it was back Should I repeat until its gone again?

Well, advanced auto will scan your codes for you for free. I don't know if the DRB has the capability of clearing codes, but to prevent yourself form going to the dealer, I would at least ask.

you already proved the code will come back.

You are treating the symptom, not the cause.

P0601 (M)
Internal Controller Failure
Internal control module fault condition (check sum) detected.

ok so what needs to be done to correct the cause of the problem? No idea what the internal controller is.

If I can make some time Ill go look at MY FSM and see where that leads.

This is no easy fix, and you may have to spend some coin to get it repaired.

Not all problems are repairable over the internet, sometimes you have to get in there yourself

autozone came up with the same code, p0601, said he had no idea how to fix it. I asked him if he could clear the code and he said yes he could but he wont. Said since I have a rejected sticker on the windshield, he isnt allowed to clear the code by law

sounds like you need a new PCM or a PCM flash
