New 5.9 Project

I have just come into possession of a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.9 Limited as a project to “flip”. I bought the Jeep on an online auction sight unseen and it was delivered to my driveway yesterday.

The Jeep is in surprisingly great condition cosmetically with only some minor scuffs / dings + a cracked front bumper on the outside and a failing headliner on the dirty but otherwise great condition interior. No seat rips or cracked dash or door cards.

The battery was DEAD as could be and would not take a charge, it also was missing the hold-down. I swapped in a spare battery I had and found out why the battery was so dead - the blower motor runs constantly even with the key out. I pulled the 40A fuse under the hood and have been doing some research into a failed blower motor power module. The ATC control panel was also dark and inoperable. I attached my DRBIII to see if I could find out any error codes from the ATC system but nothing shows up.

I also have not started it. The description on the auction simply said “runs and drives”. The oil is full and looks clean and the Vic says 1800 miles until service so it should be ok but I’d like to go over things a bit more and will likely start it tonight if everything checks out.

Here are the pictures from the auction.

Great find! I have one that color.

Pull the ATC and test the connector for ground and power. Then you can test the head unit itself to see if the switch is working.

Iím a little jealous about the DRB3! May shoot you a question about that. fsm 8w-80-7 atc head pin-out.pdf

EDIT - didnít see who was writing the post, guess you know how to troubleshoot it.

Thanks for the pin out and for the compliment! Limited ZJs w/ ATC are new to me so it will be a learning experience for sure!

The first thing I did after I won the auction was to download the 98 FSM and 98 Mopar parts catalog. I plan on going over every inch of this 5.9 and repair / replace whatever is necessary.

So far I have fixed the broken glove box and started making a to do / parts list.

The glove box looked like it was pried open at one point and 2 screws on the lower hinge had pulled away from the door. I had to drill out the 2 rivets on either end of the hinge to remove the door. Once I had the door off I was able to use to longer ZJ interior screws I had in my parts bin to securely RE-attach the hinge. Even without those 2 rivets the door seems very sturdy and latches perfectly.

My preliminary list after the first once over -

- Missing battery hold-down
- Tattered corroded battery cables / terminals
- Leaking / torn passenger CV axle boot
- Leaking power steering pressure hose + low fluid
- Malfunctioning blower motor power module
- Inoperable ATC head unit
- Failed headliner + sound bar fabric
- Broken window rain deflector / double sided foam tape drivers door
- Drivers door hinge pin bushing

Other Observations -

- Coolant leak dripping from the center of front bumper cover + low coolant in radiator
- Transmission pan wet with fluid / dripping
- Mangled but “repaired” oxygen sensor wiring above rear driveshaft
- Reman Flashmaster PCM (The above obviously took out the PCM)
- Odd tag on 249 transfer case - looks different than NVG / NPG tags I’ve seen

And, if ya don't mind sharing, how much did you give for it?

The radiator is DOA. I attempted to top up the coolant and it came pouring out the side.

After a quick search it doesn’t look like Mopar radiators are available anymore.

Any input on brands?

I just checked a Flex-a-lite for your 'niner @ O'Reillys which my friend has proven to be a leaker for $1559.00
They also have a oem style Murray brand for about 1/10th of that.
Good luck!

I needed to replace my radiator after it was damaged. My 5.2 alway ran warmer than the thermostat and almost hot on very hot (105F) days despite replacing all other cooling system parts. I thought a copper oem from the yard (cleaned up) would work best but it was no different. I ended up later with an O’Reillys aluminum radiator and it rarely goes higher than thermostat temp (165F if I remember correctly).

my 5.9 stock radiator just failed since I fixed other cooling system issues. The culprit I believe was the 18lb rad cap. The correct pressure finally did in the tank. I was so sad to have to lose the mopar radiator. I found a Spectra rad for a good price at Amazon, it's lower now than on Saturday ... https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

That's what I'm going with anyway. Time will tell how good it is.

93 red ZJ 196k 4.0. Spent more money than I should have ...
