Just bought a 98 Limited; some questions

Hey guys, just bought a 98 Limited 5.2L with 155k miles today for $1500. Runs fine, ac needs work. I plan to bring it to my mechanic this week for a tune up. Only thing I’m concerned with is rusting in the right side rocker panel. Underneath the frame looks to be what you’d expect for a 23 year old vehicle. Anyway, here’s a picture. I don’t mess with welding but I’m wondering if it’s worth having it fixed. Thanks.

Start cutting it out and see how much there is.

If that’s the extent of the rust (the rocker panel), then it’s absolutely worth keeping.

That rust is definitely way deeper than just rocker, you can see it in the floor pan/ bottom of pillar area as well. You will only see it once you cut open the rockers and see what's there. I wouldn't be surprised to find a lot more rust here and there.

As for is it worth keeping, yes if that is all the heavier rust there is in the lower unibody/ uniframe.

Underneath I don’t think the frame looks that bad but I’m getting it looked at by a very popular Jeep custom shop pretty local that does everything from oil changes to restoring jeeps. Here’s some more pics. The last two pics are right by that rusted rocker panel. That’s the worst area or the undercarriage

The passenger side lower control arm bracket rear brace is held to the uniframe by rust and it sort of looks like it's partially cracked - or it could be loose rust. Kinda hard to tell from the pictures with all the rust I highly suggest wire wheeling that area, but it's more than like it needs some work (cutting off rusty metal, welding in new).

As for the rockers, as mentioned above the smartest thing to do is to cut off current rockers and weld in box steel rockers. 2" x 6" box steel, 1/8" or 3/16" wall is enough for 95% of people, 1/4" wall is the heavy duty way.

I have a metal sanding wheel, I’ll have to go pick up a wire wheel I thought I had one. Took off a decent amount of surface rust on the frame. Looks cleaner just me using it about 5 minutes. I’ll go more thoroughly with a wire wheel when I grab one and I’ll hit the under carriage with some rust restorer. My concern is this spot in the frame clearly needs some welded steel. Waiting to hear back from the shop where I want to get a quote but I figure this will need some metal.

Just picked it up from my mechanic. He said the front axel is rusting out. Will need replacement as well as the ball joints. He’s working up a price for me when I bring it back next week. He also said the exhaust has a leak and that will need to be fixed as well. I’m wondering how worth it this all is for this Jeep (only meant to be a work beater). Thoughts ?

Junkyard axles are like 150 bucks. If you do the work yourself it won't be bad.

I’ll have to take more exterior photos but here is one of its good side. Other side has the rot/rust on the front of the rocker panel. The front passenger side undercarriage has the most rusted areas as well.
