Help identifying 4.0l block??

I bought an engine out of a 1998 ZJ, and it has a date code from 1998 on it so it must have been very late in the production run, or perhaps a warranty engine? But... the block has two strange features to it:
1. The block does not have "NVH" cast onto the side
2. The oil pressure sender is mounted on a boss at the back of the passenger side of the block (not near the distributor).

I will check the casting number tomorrow for more info, but what could this block be from, with the strange oil pressure sender location, no "NCH", and a 1998 build code cast into the side??

Here's a photo of the engine coming out of a ZJ, with the oil pressure sender just by the bell housing. Sorry, I can't get the photo to show in the body of this reply...

Could have been an XJ.

See I am kind of thinking maybe a TJ cause there is no oil filter adapter. See how the oil filter is just screwed straight into the block.

YJ is like that as well, though I think the oil pressure switch is next to the dizzy on the 95 YJ 40 in my zj

Solved, using Engine Casting Number 53020515

According to this resource, I have a 1998 ZJ block:
https://www.enginebuildermag.com/200...an-old-friend/

1998
C/N 53020515
Cast iron block, oil filter mounting surface is 90° to pan rail of engine instead of pointing downward. Uses long main bolts and stud girdle. Has 1/8? pipe thread oil tap into main oil line in rear of block. Will retro back with filter kit available from Daimler-Chrysler. Has “NVH” on side to denote block strengthened for “noise, vibration and harshness.” Grand Cherokee application.

The lack of oil filter adapter is called out in the description, as is the location of the oil pressure sender. But... according to this description, the block should still say "NVH." and it doesn't. I have two blocks sitting side-by-side right now, so I know where it says "NVH" on one of them (1997 build date), and it's for sure not there on the block I'm asking about. Wierd...

The late XJ blocks have it stamped on so my bet is it's a early TJ/ late YJ block, the good news is you don't need the filter adapter, I'm not running one and my filter fits just fine I can get you pics if you want

I will look further for a stamping, where is it stamped on the alter XJs? As to which vehicle it came from, after finding that link above, and considering I pulled it from a ZJ, I'm pretty confident now that that's where it originally came from. Wierd about the oil pressure sender being in that spot, but that is indeed what the link I posted says should be there for a 1998 ZJ block with that casting number!! I wonder why it was changed?

I also checked the head and it's a 0630 so again, that info suggests this is a 1996-1998 engine.

As to the filter adapter, I will be swapping one on from my old engine, even with the hassle of the o0rings that dies every few years, because I want to stay with the larger filter that fits horizontally (PH8A or Napa 1515 or equivalent), hoping that I get a wee bit less oil bypassing the filter for basically no more cost. I don't have evidence it makes a difference, but it feels good to try!

I'll take a look for an NVH stamping today!
