Front Axle Locked Up

I bought a 1998 ZJ 5.2 with 82,000 miles a couple weeks ago. The front axle acts like it is outfitted with a locker (but it doesn't). When turning in a paved parking lot the outside wheel skips which is putting significant strain on the front end. It does this all the time. What could be going on?

Could be a bad viscous coupler in the t-case too. Pull the front driveshaft and find out.

Yep, sounds like a NP249 transfer case with a bad VC.

Bought a 95 ZJ with a 4.0 last year out of an impound lot.
Not a daily driver but it does get driven a lot.
Any way mine did what you described when I first drove it home.
After backing it up a few times, it lessened.
Then after a few trips in the desert, putting in and out of all 4 wheel options it went away.
Now when I use 4 wheel drive after taking it out,I back up a few feet - guess it’s an old habit because my old dodge was that way.
Either way no issues and I’ve put about the 2,000 miles on it.

Thank you everyone. It looks like the VC is it. I am going to do a swap for an NP231.

Where can I go with my current 249 tag number to make sure I have the correct 231 TC to swap in?

What are your plans with the ZJ? If you plan on wheeling it, 231 is an upgrade. If this is street- driven, I'd honestly pick one of two options:
1. Buy a rebuilt VC and replace the faulty one.
2. Remove the VC from the transfer case, and you end up with RWD and 4lo part time.

As for testing if it's the VC, remove front driveshaft and go for a test drive. If you don't feel any binding it's most likely the VC. You can verify by raising front axle and testing how easily the wheels rotate (test wheels straight and at full steering lock), and if there are any abnormal noises while rotating the wheels.
