exhaust manifold /headers and y-pipe options

Hi guys,
i need to change my exhaust manifold gaskets because i have a leak on the passenger side.

since i need to take the manifolds off the block, can i mod them somehow?

i think doug thorleys are the only headers option that won't need any notching, but they are simply too expensive for me.

92 / 93 360 (also 318?) had bigger manifolds, but what exactly am i looking for? ram trucks? vans?

also, what about the crushed section of the y-pipe? what's the best bang for the buck? do it myself ? any aftermarket options?

thanks

If you're after the 2 1/8" outlet exhaust manifolds, you want the ones with last 3 digits #618 and #619 which are on the early Dakotas and Rams ('92/93).

Replacing the crushed section on the passenger down pipe will probably be the best gain without new headers. I've not heard of 93s having larger or better flowing headers and that seems like a waste of time.
Anything besides Thorleys is going to need a bit of modification to work.

My 96 came with 2 1/8" manifolds. Not sure about my 98. I put doug thorlies on my 96 and they were worth every single cent. That being said I see they are over $1100 now. When i bought them they were around 800.

I don't know what quality these are but I seen them on ebay and they weren't an option back when I had my 96.

thanks guys for the tips.

keep in mind that i'm interested in this just because i need to remove the ex manifolds in order to replace gaskets.

the overall idea is bigger manifolds and y-pipe.

also, keep in mind that i can not run headers because i won't be able to pass inspection. i need something "factory looking".

any tips on that y-pipe?

After a little reading, it seems the big outlet manifolds were used on '96-98 GCs. And '92/93 Durangos and Vans too. So Mark, you may already have what you want.

What some have done on various vehicles is hog out the manifold outlets to 2 1/4" and then run a dual 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" exhaust. Or do a custom y-pipe joining 2 1/4" or 2 1/2" downpipes to a single 3" pipe.

hi Andy, that's an interesting point.

what does hogging the manifold mean? like boring the outlet?

before purchasing anything i'll measure mines in order to be sure.

thanks

Sweet! every once in awhile the Jeep gods send a gift.

What are those casting numbers? I can't see from the pic.
From reading, I think the early and late castings are all 2 1/8".

damn, removing the manifolds was super easy (probably because the engine has like 4k km on it), removing the y-pipi from the cat/cat back section is a nightmare...

at this point, since the whole exhaust system will be off, i'll try to attach a second exit on other side of the rear bumper.

i trying to enlarge the crushed section by heating the pipe up and hammering down another pipe into it. i'm down a lil more than 2 inches now, about half way.

i'm no good at welding.
