Drivers door speaker is badly distorted.

Sound is badly distorted. I removed the speaker and the speaker cone if fine. It was tight in the mounting frame.
Is the speaker "blown" or is it a problem with the radio/amplifier.

If I use the joy stick to select the Rear speakers the Left channel is not distorted.
Only the Left Front speaker is distorted. ( it sounds like a blown speaker, if you know what that sounds like.)
The FAC's do not have this in the archives.

All the speakers were blown out on my '96. Would not doubt yours are heading south also.

I went with pretty much a factory replacement.
Infinity REF-6522EX Shallow-Mount 6-1/2 Inch Coaxial Car Speakers .

Some adaptor/connectors make for an easy install.
Metra 72-1002 Speaker Connectors for Jeep and Eagle Vehicles

There may be better options out there, but these are good enough for my ears.

I replaced all 4 speakers with Rockford Fosgate R165X3. I purchased them from crutchfield, which supplies the adpators at no cost, all for $97 shipped to your door. I couldnt believe how much I cared about audio till I started driving my jeep on hour long road trips.

I second this recommendation. I did my front with these, will do the back later.

Only downside is the gray liner inside the door is old, brittle, and crumbled away once I removed the panel. I haven't found a replacement for that yet, not even sure if it is necessary, but they put it there for a reason.

I was referencing the gray liner between underneath the inside door panel when you remove it to replace the speaker. Mine disintegrated.

The speaker cover is intact

Yep, mine is like a Graham Crackers. You touch it and it just crumbles. Lowest Bidder on that part.
