Dirt in my starter

1996 5.2 Laredo. I’m working on replacing my oil pan gasket, rear main seal and oil pump. I just took the starter off and when I removed it from the block, a bunch of greasy dirt came falling out. Definitely didn’t look like it should have so much dirt inside of it. Pic shows a small amount of the dirt that was actually in there. So, what might be causing this? What problems could it cause? And what is the best way to clean all of this dirt out? Thanks in advance.

Someone has buried your Jeep in a mudhole at some point.

Even though my 94 leaks from every orifice, the starter was clean when I removed it.

Oh yeah... that was me lol. When I bought the Jeep in October I took the starter out for a different project and it was clean. I swamped it pretty good about a month later so that makes sense. Iíll clean it out real good before I put it back in. Should I be concerned about any long term damage? I mean it was 8+ months ago and I havenít had any issues

I wouldn't worry too much. If it's still working now, you didn't damage anything. Just clean it out and put it back. It might affect the life of your starter if it's constantly getting crammed with mud, but the occasional trip in the dirt isn't going to do much.
