Broken part - I don't know what this is

I was recently changing out my crankshaft position sensor on my 98 Grand Cherokee 5.9L. While I was reaching behind the engine to feel for the senor and connector, this piece broke off. I hardly touched it and am suspecting it was brittle due to the age of the plastic. Due to the inaccessibility and tightness of the area, I haven't been able to see what I broke. I'm planning on using an inspection camera, but was hoping Jeep enthusiasts on this forum could help me identify what it is, what it does, and how screwed (cost and repair) I am. Thanks, Breck989

I came across something like that when I pulled my trans. Im not 100% but I think its a breather filter for the t case. Im replacing the breather hose to route it fully to the engine bay and I plan on using a lawn and garden fuel filter to replace it.

Thank you for the response and answer as well as for the link. I appreciate your help. Seems as though I should be alright for the time being as long as I don't go through any deep water.
