AC Compressor has mind of its own?

On my 94 ZJ, I noticed today that the ac compressor is cycling on/off occasionally as it would normally do in hot weather with the A/C turned on. The only problem is is that it is 40F outside and the a/c switch is OFF.

I pulled the LP switch plug off the drier and it stopped cycling. I also pressed the A/C switch on the dash a few times on/off to make sure it wasn't sticking (which I don't think it is). A/C worked fine this past summer but haven't used it since early August.

Maybe I'm having a senior moment here but I don't think this should be happening with the a/c switch off... Even if it was low on refrigerant, without the A/C switch turned on, I would not expect the compressor to run. Is my thinking correct here?

Are you sure it wasn't on defrost? The AC will cycle there also.

Really?

As a matter of fact, I generally keep it on defrost/floor setting as was the case here...I honestly never noticed the compressor cycling on before but now that I think of it, that makes sense.

Thanks!

On all Chrysler stuff - the A/C is turned ON if you use defrost. Regardless of the A/C button.

If its too cold outside, the A/C will stay off.

That the a/c runs when on the defrost setting was my learning for the day!
