96 non flip glass lift gate on 98?

I found a great lift gate (mine is rusted and dented and needs replaced) on a 96 ZJ. Unfortunately, it does not have the flip up glass I guess it was an option in 96 and not standard.

So, what would it take to make this work on my 98 5.9? I never really cared about the glass, rarely every used it. Everything else should bolt right up and be plug and play?

It will physically bolt in, I think all the electronics will be the same, except the new liftgate won't have anything for the glass (obviously).

Meaning the switch to unlock the glass won't work which in this case doesn't matter.

Hmmm. Decisions!

As someone who also has to replace their liftgate but wants a lift glass version, count yourself lucky. I'll likely have to replace alot of wiring. You'll be plug and play.

Yes if I were going old to new vs new to old it would be difficult

95 should be plug and play for flipper glass.

There are no added wires going between the body and the gate for flip vs fixed, it's only wiring inside the hatch that matters.

No, has nothing to do with OBD, it was a special thing in 95 that came with the orvis (and only the orvis AFAIK) and then became more common as time went on.

Do you know if the non flip glass gates have rear defrost in the glass?

Both glass types have rear defrost.

Thanks. You are a great resource to the Jeep community.

Can't see any reason not to snatch this thing up if it's in as good of shape as he claims.
