93 ZJ engine swap question

OK, Ive never done an engine rebuild or swap before and Im a little worried about tackling this.

I have a 93 zj with an AW4 transmission. I haven't taken the engine apart yet, but I think I have a broken rod. It could be just the rod bearings, but It is REALLY loud when started.

My question is this. I have the chance to pick up an engine from a 94 Cherokee for $400 - will it fit my zj? and should I do that and just swap it out, or should I try and replace the broken rod instead?

Its also possible that my zj engine is toast and I would either need to rebuild or replace anyway.

It will work. Just use your engine accessory drive brackets and pulleys. Also use your flexplate as it will match your torque converter. I put a 96 ZJ engine in my 93 and used the flexplate from my original engine as there was a 90 degree and offset style bolt pattern for the TC. Swap all your sensors and needed items and you should be GTG.

OP has an AW4, so it's the same transmission & flexplate to what XJs used.
