4.0 or 5.2?

im looking to buy a 98 zj. But not sure which engine i want. I'd love to have the power of the 5.2, but i also love the simplicity, and dependability of the 4.0. Also if i bought a 4.0 i wouldn't have to swap the t-case. my plans for the jeep are 4.5 IRO and 32" tires. would the D35 hold up okay?
which engine should i go with?!

There is little evidence to suggest the 5.2 isn't as "dependable" as the I6. The Chrysler 318 (5.2L) has been around a looooong time.

Not sure I understand the TC issue. I'd go V8 just because you can never have too much power, and you can sometimes be wanting more. Esp. with the GC. It's a big, heavy beast...

I'm also not sure about the TC issue.

As for the 4.0, I have been really happy with mine. I have a 96 limited w/ the factory tow package. It has been reliable and great for towing my boats. I've even pulled a 22 ft sailboat (weighs in at 5000lbs + or -) without incident over great distances and up wet ramps in 4 low. The Jeep has really proved to be a true performer in these situations, perhaps due to the torque - e- ness of the L6.

To my surprise, I have always had good gas mileage with this motor too, all things considered. I recently did the "cold air intake", high flow exhaust mod, and tuned her up and it increased even more.

Today, I drove 74.3 miles in 2wd mode at work visiting customers, and it was an even mix of highway (interstate) and city (stop and go) and my cpu read 21.8 avg mpg! (this is on all stock suspension and tire size so I feel it is accurate.)

I can't speak on the 318 as I have never owned one. Good luck with your search, and I hope this information helps.

You WOULD want the 242, there's no VC in a 242 its a selectrac. You are thinking of the quadratrac 249 that came with ALL V8 ZJ's. Once you can get past that its definately worth it for V8. I've got a V8 with the 242 case I swapped in and I love it. Best combo ever, just never came that way. You could get away with running 32's and a V8 without gearing, there will be power loss but not enough that you couldnt live with. A 4.0 on the other hand, even if it has a tow package which means it has 3.73 gears, with 32's it'd most likely be gutless. If you got one without the tow package it would have 3.55 gears and be even worse. All V8 grand cherokees came with 3.73 gears. The cost of re-gearing the 4.0 would def be more then getting a V8 and swapping out the transfer case. You could always look at it that way....

LOL Diggin the squirrel. My 4.0 is dependable and very very cheap to maintain. 5.2s are dependable too. Just depends if you get one that was driven by some jeeper that says you need a 5.2 for the power, sound and used it that way. The biggest draw back with a higher power used vehicle is how was it treated? Dont see many 4.0 youtube videos of drag racing or burnouts. LOL

with 3.55s mine feels awful slow. I wonder how bad the mileage would suffer with 3.73s...

what do you average on a tank though? I average in the high teens right now. what RPM do you cruise at when you are going 60-65?
