We had a blast. It was amazing. Next year we are going to Italy because the wife wants to, but I tried to convince her to go back to Alaska and just explore. She's not the no-plan type. She also doesn't camp. Her idea of camping is a 4 star hotel.

I camp but won't sleep on the ground and require hvac.
In other words, a camper, preferably with a quiet generator.

Up until about 4 years ago I was doing 2-3 bike rallies a year and happily sleeping on the ground in a tent (really good camping pads and sleeping bags). My back actually felt better after sleeping on the ground for a couple of nights(bad disc).

Then one of my friends and his wife left a rally early and threw me the cabin keys and told me to pack my tent before the rains set in. From then on I'm spoiled and started splitting a cabin with another regular at all the rallies.

Now I need to thin out some of the camping gear I've stockpiled over the years.

Alaska is a world of its own and you can spend a lifetime exploring it. I was born and raised a bit northwest of where you were and I have tried to get my dear wife to move back but she wont have any of that crazy talk.....

During my USCG career every single person I knew that had ever been stationed there spent all their waking hours figuring out how to get back.

I did get to spend a week in Anchorage in the Spring for a conference and did some touring . I definitely see the attraction.

Edit: Not this Spring, but either 1996 or 1997. It was beautiful. End of March/first of April. I just wish like Hell I'd known other attendees were going halibut fishing on charter boats at night; getting it processed; frozen; and shipped back home.

But I did get to tour a USCG 378 high endurance cutter in port for a patrol break. And discovered the Engineering Officer was the EO on my last ship when I was Ops Boss. (And lest you think I might be a snobbish officer, I worked my way up through the enlisted ranks before going commissioned officer). And my Good Conduct ribbon and permanent Coxswain pin immediately got me creds in the Chief's Mess.

Hey! I'm keeping one set of the best of everything. Just in case.

As an aside, My best tent out of the three I still have is a Hillary bought from Sears in either 1969 or no later than 1970. Not until after 2009 did I ever have to re-waterproof it. It's as good as new again.

Even Bill won't get inside Hillary. Get rid of that old bag.

My eyes see the beauty of Alaska but all my joints see are the cold and pain. Stick me in a desert please. Circumstances seem to be pushing me to Waco which isn't desert enough for my liking but it does check many other boxes.

Also Good Conduct Medal? More like the haven't been caught yet award. Or never got caught award.

As for the Good Conduct Medal, we used to refer to it as 4 years of undetected crime. I'll say no more on that.

Waco has some really nice areas. Not a whole lot happens south of Valley Mills.
