Windshield Hinge Saga

Well I am stuck in a sense.

When I sold my old rusted out tub to a couple of guys that were wanting something to learn to weld on I left the windshield hinges attached. Thinking I can get a OEM set when I was ready to paint was wrong.

Now after contacting a lot of the Jeep salvage co.s out on the interwebs I am finding these are about the hardest part to find for a jeep.

I did get a pair off ebay a while back and after pulling the aluminum tape they had some serious rust. Got them blasted and the backsides look like the moon, and started rusting pretty quick. I dont really want to put those on a clean tub but everything I am reading is that the aftermarket hinges are garbage.

Ideas?

Should have gotten a tetanus shot with this jeep!

I read some pretty harsh reviews on those. A few stating you cant take the doors off because of the button head hardware that comes with them. If you notice the mounting holes are not countersunk

Non OEM hinges are about half the thickness of OEM.

Ebay them but be more aware of where they are coming from.
Don't think that hinges from one rust belt state are going to be any better than another rust belt state.

If you see hinges from a seller in Arizona, Nevada or California, chances are pretty good they'll be rust-free.
Geography and climate.

Sad thing is right now after many Ebay searches I have not found 1 set of OEM hinges. Its a major shortage.

I dont know if I just wire wheel the ones I got to death then hit them with Chassis Saver, then before mounting put a thin layer of silicon between the hing and the tub will keep them from rusting?

Absolutely, do your mail order from a state where rust is a non issue. My experience also is the aftermarket hinges are about half the thickness as the OEM hinges. I returned blackened stainless hinges and sandblasted my OEM and painted them. Much better hinges.
Try these sources: J&W Jeep, Antelope, CA. Watson & Sons Jeep Salvage, Pinetown, NC Daveys Jeep 330-337-5037, Auto Quest Jeeps.com in Houston Tx
