What to look for in a waggy?

I'm looking to pick up some D44's from a wagoneer but I'm wonder what to look for when inspecting the axles. Are there some year waggy's that are a little more desireable than the others? Or ones that make the swap a little easier? I've found some cheap non-running waggy's but just trying to get some more info on what to look for and what to avoid. I've found an '87 and '88 for around $500, non-running.

I also have an opportunity to pick up a '78 f-250 for decently cheap. It has the D60 in the rear and d44 up front, 4.10 gears and disc brakes. Would this work a little better? The price on this one is about $1500 but the truck runs great so I could part everything else out.

I plan on just getting some axles ready for when I go SOA. Just trying to piece everything together so I can do it this winter. I don't plan on running tires larger than 37" and it'll be going on my '94.

If you are gonna run 37's or bigger then the waggy's are out. Go with the 60 and 44. I just did the same swap , just have to move the perches and hook up steering and brakes. I'm running 39x 18 mickeys.
