Tailgate replacement options

Hi fellas!

Recently my YJ's e-brake gave out while the jeep was in neutral (engine running to warm up) and my poor baby backed into a tree The tailgate and spare tire seem to have absorbed most of the impact but, while I might have gotten lucky to avoid further damage, the tailgate is pretty much junk now.

I searched and couldn't find definitive reviews on aftermarket options so I thought I ask the community.

Would any of you go for a Crown/Omix-Ada tailgate replacement or should I try to find a used one in good shape instead? Looks like the cost is roughly the same judging by ebay prices and all the remaining components should transfer from the old tailgate with some minor straightening out.

Thanks in advance!

Haven't bought a tailgate yet, but from my experience with other body parts, no aftermarket parts compare to oem.
They are lighter steel.

I would prefer a prefect used OEM to a new aftermarket.
Check with used Jeep part sellers.
Collins Brothers, Inland Jeep, Davies Jeeps
So many I can't think of them.

Maybe we can compile a list sometime.

It's a bit of a drive from Atlanta (2-3 hrs), but there is a Jeep junk yard in Huntsville that may have some tail gates. I have had to call them for a few things. Worth a shot.

Get creative. Think outside the catalog. This is my YJ tailgate.

More importantly, what are you going to do about the parking brake???

We don't want you to suffer the fate of Anton Yelchin.

Thanks guys! Sounds like I need to find an oem tailgate. Did that last time but thought perhaps these parts have gotten better since last time when I replaced the original. Got lucky back then and found it on craigs list for like $60

And no the last one was not the result of the parking break slipping the PO accidentally backed into a tree and took a decade for it to crack after I got it so I replaced it.

I have an outstanding recall for the parking brake and I'm gonna have to find it in me to take it to the dealer or plead with them to obtain the parts so I can do it myself. I just don't trust dealerships much... looking back I should have dealt with it a long time ago. Definitely don't want to end up like Yelchin!

I saw one on flea-bay for 125 and free shipping.
If you can't find a better deal, you can always fall back on that.

Wait. There's a e-brake recall? That might explain why my e-brake releases itself after 30 seconds or as soon as I finish telling myself "Nah it's good".

There is no recall for an '88 thru about '90 I think.

Mine has been feeling excellent since I did this:
