So whatís the secret to buying a trans yoke seal?

(This has turned out to be more of a rant than anything) I had a pretty good leak last year, oil getting flung all over underneath. I bought a seal online, way too big. Tried another, also way too big. Eventually I went on Amazon and bought everything they said fit. Out of the four(?) only one was right, but I was able to send the others back at no charge. I installed it, and skip ahead six months and the new one is leaking worse than the old one. (yes my vent line is clear)

The one I took out was a plastic/rubber type that fit flush. The current one if a metal flange type with rubber that sticks out on the yoke a tad. Since it lasted such a short period of time, I wondered if it was truly the right one. So recently I’ve attempted to buy the other style. I’ve ordered two in two weeks, both of which are way too big. Since it really wasn’t worth the hassle to send any of them back, for what would amount to a couple dollars, I haven’t returned any of them. But at this point I’ve eaten the cost of five seals; that’s adding up. Note that they were all supposed to fit according to the sites they came from.

I’m at a loss at how you’re supposed to know what your buying vs what you need, since with limited exception everything they show says it will fit. I’m also shocked at the size of some of these seals, it would be a big dang yoke for such a small tranny. I guess I’m going to give up trying to get the other style seal. Just order another of the one I have; hope it works better.

Is your Jeep jacked up? And axles shimmed properly? I had the same issue about 6 months ago, got tranny rebuilt, the hole rear housing was cracked and PO used sealant or something to hold it together, and my seal was worn on the bottom side, too much stress from a previous lift, I have currently 3.25".

I ordered an Omix rear housing and seal, seal was ok, but housing was cracked straight from the box. Figured it was the weak link.

So, answer? I invested in a SYE and a double Cardin (spelling) shaft. Been happy ever since. Also put 6į shims under my axle point directly at my transfer case. Been happy ever since. Not happy that I pumped out another $1k or so, lol, but happy with the ride and performance.

Unless you're talking about a different seal?

Crap, lol, than that's just bad luck....

Although, like I said, I found that the housing and the seal were a "weak link", IMHO. 2 new seals leaked when installed and the housings seem to break just from looking at them.

I'm sure some on here will say they've had zero issues for 20 years or something. Maybe they were made better back in the day? Who knows.

I am assuming this is the rear seal? If so the bushing for the slip yoke may be worn and need replaced. That would cause seals to wear very fast.

^^^ that, and the output bearing (not really an output bearing but the bearing on that shaft can be ‘fine’ but have a lot or radial runout that effects the seal. The slip yoke shaft itself could want replacement or at the least a quick polish with 800 wetndry.

What siva said is heading in the right direction imho

Lol, when I got my transmission rebuilt, they ordered a Jeep kit, then the guy calls me and says, "hey, is this the factory transmission?", I said, "No, but it is an AX15, like other Jeeps.... the PO 'upgraded' to an AX15....". Turns out, nobody knows where that tranny came from, they tried over 20 different bearings to see what would fit!!

Jeeps.... gotta love 'em, that whole "Its a Jeep thing" is code for 5 trips to the auto store, from my experience.

Mother father cocker spaniel! Another seal came in today... way too big. Man I thought this one was going to be right. Multiple sites said so, had more specifics that usual, but again, way too large an opening. Only ordering them via Amazon prime now so I can send them back for free (eventually they will cut me off).

The weirdest thing is, I decided to just buy another of what I have in there now, at least to buy me some time. I got that one through Amazon. When I bring it up to "Buy it again", it tells me it doesn't fit my Jeep! (even though it said it did when I bought it last time) That could mean: A. An example of how screwed up Amazon is when it comes to car parts. B. It really is wrong and that's why it leaked so quick.

Haven't had to replace any Jeep seals yet, but have LOTS of experience with engine/transmission seals on bikes, especially the Ducatis I used to have. I'm lucky enough to have a bearing jobber locally that sells to individuals as well as industry. If you have a bearing supply house nearby take the seal that fit and see if they can match it with maybe even a better one. Have the shaft and housing diameters handy too in case they are really good at determining the best correct seal.

89 YJ Parts Bin Special titled as 84 CJ7; parts ranging from 1984 -2000; 4.2L with AX-15. Also a 2000 XJ Sport 2WD with a troublesome AW4.
