RPMs drop pretty fast.

I am just curious as to what dictates how fast the RPMs drop when you let off the throttle? Like any other carbed Jeep owner, over time I have adjusted air/fuel mixture, timing, idle speed yata-yata-yata... And I have noticed that after some changes the rpms would drop slow after revving the engine, and after some changes it would drop fast after revving the engine. Could a lean mix cause a fast drop? Timing?

Just curious as to what can influence the rpm drop speed because as I have things set right now it drops pretty fast (not the fastest I've experienced, but pretty fast) and it makes shifting gears in my manual a little more clunky.

Thanks, Evan

Smell of fuel means you're running too rich.

And engine wind down is determinant by the engine build / design. My 4.0L's RPMs drop really quickly as well. All the 4.0's I've seen as well as the single 4.2L I've experienced all revved down at the same rate.

Same here. I think it's normal, but a carbed engine might be different. I dunno.

No sir. I work with carbed GM-blocked engines (As well as carbed Volvos, unfortunately). They are marine engines but in reality, they're just car engines with a different cooling system. At any rate, they rev down just as quickly as their four-stroked brethren.
