Questions from a new jeep owner (motor related)

Hello you all - looking to get ahead of this/get started on the obvious things this might be and work towards success. I'm slightly handy, but new to Jeeps.*

I got myself a 95 yj with the 2.5l and I think the previous owners were rough on her. The check engine light stays on.

The motor coughs and stumbles intermittently and backfires every 15 minutes or so. It starts up and idles fine (maybe a touch rough idle). I had the computer repaired, and I installed new plugs and new air filter, but none of those made any difference.*

I was thinking this as a plan of attack for parts to replace - coil (or the jeep's equivalent), fuel filter, Oxygen sensor (if this has one), plug wires and check out under the distributor cap, and also put a new set of injectors in.*

What are your thoughts and what might I be missing?

Backfiring is curious as it is (should be) a MPFI system. Backfiring would lead me to believe that you may need a timing chain. A full tune-up couldn't hurt, but you may want to pop off the timing cover and take a look at the chain.

Since you are new, here is a link to a Field Service manual for the 1995 YJ: https://www.dropbox.com/s/ret5kdafmr...anual.pdf?dl=0

You should be able to download that as a PDF for reference on getting to and changing the timing chain.

Thank you so much for the link. I should mention that it smells like its running rich and it looks to me like it is not getting any kind of decent gas mileage.

Checked the codes - odd ones.
12 - battery disconnect
33 - Air cond clutch relay (this unit was a no ac unit)
24 - TPS sensor or circuit

Is it usual for these codes to not appear in chronological order?

Did you get a 55 at the end?

Replace the TPS.

Running rich is usually caused by an exhaust manifold leak. Does it sound like it has a tick-tick-tick from the manifold? A crack? the fresh air enters the crack and tricks the O2 sensor into running rich.

Yessir I got the 55 at the end. I have a TPS on order and I'll pick that up today. I'll inspect the manifold. Any other ways to diagnose that?

to diagnose a manifold leak? Sure, remove it and physically inspect it.
