Proper Power Steering Fluid For 1994 YJ?

Hi,

I have a 1994 YJ 4.0 and am wanting to add some power steering fluid to bring the level up to the mark on the dipstick.

The owners manual says to use Mopar part 4549617.

I cannot find anything on the web that tells me what the current equivalent would be in Valvoline or other brands since 4549617 is apparently not available.

Lots of sites say don't use ATF and some say don't use generic PS fluid but they don't say exactly what to use, so at this point in time I don't know what to use. I certainly don't want to add the wrong fluid.

Can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

I always just use the cheap house brand Power Steering Fluid. Plenty of people use ATF with good results as well.

I have been using Valvoline PS fluid in my without issue so far in my 92 and I have a great deal of extra stress on my system with the hydro boost brakes and steering assist.

By the way welcome to Jeepforum!

Yep, just use regular off the shelf PS fluid. ATF will work but has a high detergent content. I am not sure it it will affect anything but stick to the plain old PS fluid and your golden.

X4 house brew.

I refresh once a year (on limited mileage) with the turkey baster method.

Thanks to everyone for your replies.

I have a bottle of Valvoline PS Fluid from another vehicle, so I'll just top it off with that.

Thanks again, much appreciated.
