Parking brake cable replacement too tight

I'm currently replacing pretty much all the brakes on my '93 YJ and have an issue with a new rear passenger side parking brake cable. When installed the new cables are both the same length as the old ones but the amount of pressure on the passenger side cable is significantly higher than on the driver side. Which is making it almost impossible to pull forward and attach at the equalizer. As far as I can tell it is one of 2 problems.


1. The rear passenger cable is too short. The cable seems to have plenty of length and is the same as the old cable that came off so I don't think this would be the issue. Although i can not get it pulled far enough after install to attach to the equalizer.



2. The spring attached to cable inside the drum is too stiff. With new cables on both driver and passenger side the spring on the driver side is drastically easier to compress and can be done by hand while the passenger side cable I can barely get to compress at all.


I'm leaning more towards option 2 but am not sure what route to take to fix it. Possibly buy another new cable and see if the issue exists again? or possibly trim the spring to make it shorter to even out the amount of tension applied to each side when the brake is activated?


Has anyone else had this issue this issue with new cables? They are crown automotive stock replacements.

The springs should both be hard to compress. I would suspect the easier one.

If you cannot fix it with a hammer then it has to be an electrical problem.

So are you saying the softer one could be the problem? I’m having trouble figuring out which one may be the issue. Driver said I can pull the end of the cable with one hand and compress it fairly easily about 4” but passenger side I can grab with two hands and pull as hard as I can and it will barely compress an inch or so?

They’re both just so drastically different I’m not sure which one is right and which one is wrong.

Maybe a "dumb question" but it's the kind of thing I'm not too proud to admit I've done before - is the cable "inverted", meaning you've inadvertently got the left and right sides transposed? It's probably only even POSSIBLE if the cable has no clear left-right side.

I redid the entire rear braking system. New cables, brakes and springs. The passenger side cable should be able to slide in and out easily. My passenger side cable wouldnt move at all so I had to replace it and then re-adjust the drum brakes. Did you readjust? Before you put the new cable in could you slide it easily within the sleeve?

Originally the cable was rusted and could not move which is why I am replacing it. The entire brake system on the rear axle is all brand new except for the lines and is all adjusted with the new drums and shoes in place. The new cable does slide easily through the sleeve until it hits the spring and then it’s very difficult to pull.

I guess really since it is just the parking brake as long as it engages and disengages properly it shouldn’t be too big of a deal. My main worry is just uneven wear or only one side being activated when the brake is applied.
