Howell TBI Issues and Resolutions

Okay so I bought a jeep with a carb and bought a used TBI my dad had it installed while I was on orders for Army training in July as an early birthday present.

Here are the Issues I've run into so far with the jeep:
Weber Carburetor Issues
Rich or low idle no in between adjusted the tension on the O2 screw and tightened both down didn't solve running rich but kept engine from idling below 500 rpm

Howell TBI issues:
I have had this kit in for a little while and when I attempted to take my heep to the mountains it started to exhibit vapor lock issues. I had the heep towed back home and took my gf's honda instead. Today I took the heep out to Erie and back to get a new soft top from Jeeps Unlimited. I didn't have any issues till I was a block away from work. The heep started to show the same symptoms of sputtering and bucking, but the weird part is that this only occurred in 1st gear; if I shifted to 2nd there wasn't an issue.

Popped my gas cap and the heep is sitting right now. I will be posting on this thread how I resolve the issue for anyone else that may experience similar problems. I have read through all of the other threads on this so I'm not looking for suggestions here until I can't finger the problem any more.

Update Most of the issues that remain with The TBI are due to the Injectors and fuel sending unit in the TBI. Also have a few exhaust leaks from removing all the vacuum, but that will be fixed later. It looks a lot less crazy without all the Pulsed air and Vacuum Lines. Removed all the actuators and anything unnecessary to the current setup of the jeep.

So a little Update. While I was working on the wiring harness I decided that I would clean things up a little. I have a few problems that remain with The TBI. One is that the fuel sending unit in the TBI needs to be replaced. I have a high pitched whistle indicating another issue and a low throaty gurgle from an exhaust leak I still have yet to cut and weld shut.

My Howell kit has a bit of a whistle at idle just from air sucking past the butterfly. I can only hear it when the air filter housing is off.

The whistle is loud almost like shifting on a crappy Honda race kit

Garage
tossing out a few guesses.
  • I would fix the leaks before doing anything else. That may be causing a misread from the O2 sensor
  • maybe the speed sensor is bad or not screwed in all the way
  • check the fuel hoses to make sure the suction and return at the tank are not reversed
  • I had problems with running rich and Howell made me a new chip which solved it
  • test the fuel pressure
  • do you have an OBD1 scanner?

lastly, don't toss out your pulse air stuff. There are at least two threads right now of guys looking for it.
