Headlights do not work; marker lights do. Grounding issue?

I have a 94 YJ where the headlights generally do not work. Once in a while they will decide to come on. At first glance it feels like a grounding issue till you test the "flash to pass" and the high beams will illuminate.

I have done zero troubleshooting of the issue because I am waiting on the power probe I purchased to arrive. Mostly I am posting to see if this is a common issue and if so where to start.

Any other thoughts or suggestions?

Check the headlight switch first. It's prone to fail due to a poor and common design choice of the 80's and 90's.

The 4th 5-seater YJ in the world.

So I found the headlight relay mod thread:

https www jeepforum com/forum/f12/head-light-relay-mod-write-up-wow-what-difference-1399040/

.. and I am going to do that along with replacing the switch. Fairly confident this type of double-tap will resolve the issue. But will also be checking the fuse.

There’s a write up on adjusting the rod-to-switch interface on here somewhere. That might get you going. Also, I’ve had several Jeeps where fooling around with the headlight switch plug totally fixed the headlights that would shut off randomly.

That’s not to discourage you from doing the headlight relay mod!!
And realistically after 30 years the headlight switch itself really could be worn out 🙂 with that dimmer piece on the column so go for it.
