Gear Carriers for gear ratio swap

OK - I've got some conflicting information on this one... '88 YJ with I6 and 5-speed.

I believe that my jeep has the 3.54 axle ratio, and was looking to put 4.10's in it. My understanding is the carriers have to be swapped for anything lower, but then I was told ONLY the front carrier needs to be swapped and the rear is fine and doesn't need to be swapped. I've searched here but couldn't find any definate info - most just reference the carrier needs to be swapped.

I have an 88 that used to have 3.55s that I swapped to 4.11s, but truetrac in the rear so not sure about it. The front definitely has to be swapped.

You could always ask whoever you are buying your gears/carriers from. I got em from Randy's R&P, the sales guy knew immediately, but I can't recall the cutoff for the D35. I think the D30 was 3.73s with the stock sized carrier.

Black '88YJ 4.2L
2.5" Skyjacker, 32x11.5s, 4.11s, Weber, HEI, etc.
