Engine in my 90 YJ?

Changing the plugs in my YJ today and also going to do the oil filter... that reminded me that when i look up the oil filter that is currently on my jeep it says it does not fit my 90, but in my case it sure does. I believe there were at least 5 owners before me so who knows what actually was done on mine but is there a way, by some serial number on the engine block, etc what engine i actually have in mine?
It is a in-line 6 cylinder and takes oil filer PF61E with spark plugs champion rc12pec5.

Thanks in advance. Aaron

Well, Wiki says...
Quote:
The YJ used a 2.5 L AMC 150 I4 or optional 4.2 L AMC 258 I6 until 1990. Starting in 1991, a fuel-injected 180 hp (134 kW) 4.0 L AMC 242 variant replaced the 112 hp (84 kW) 4.2 L 258 CID straight-6.

So, do you have fuel injection or a carburetor ?

There is a date code stamped on the passenger side between plugs 2 and 3 that you can use to determine the date of manufacture. Also, if your middle exhaust ports are together that's a 4.2 head. Also, some people (like me on my '90) changed the oil filter connector to take the much more common 4.0 filters, so maybe the same was done for yours as well.

Thanks for the info John - Im running a carb so i must have the 4.2 L AMC 258 I6 but i want to check the date code that is stamped on it, which i will do.
Kevrags == great info, im going to check this today. Very interesting if the oil filter connector was changed after the fact.

That doesn’t take a PH16 or 3985?!!

(Is the pf61 just a high-volume version of PH16?)

Seeing the blue paint makes me think your motor came out of a CJ. According to the code, the engine was made in November of 1977

77 and 78 often had the 12-counterweight crankshaft 🙂 and that’s some CJ but mostly jeep truck motors is what I understand.

LOL my ‘89 has a 98XJ 4.0 and I painted it AMC blue when I put it in. If the ‘78 air cleaner would’ve fit under my 1960s hood I would have used it as well just to mess with anyone who would know and might see it 😄

Some 4.2's came with a different filter that's not listed.
We have one!
I'll look at the number on it when it comes home later. It's out driving around.
Took a whole lot of trial and error to find the right filter.

I bought a reman 4.2 for mine and it absolutely does not take the filter called for for a '90. Appears the block is an older 4.2, I buy the filter an '85.
