D30 housing trashed

Last summer put in a 4.10 8.8 and 4.10 front gear with a Spartan locker. Now putting in 4.88 gears with an ARB in the rear. Rear setup went fine but front had a large chunk laynig in the bottom of the housing. Guessing the housing was broken but the bearing was fine until I installed the locker. Now with the race unsupported and the locker, the race couldn't hold up.

So this is the 8.8 you're concerned with or the D30? I'm confused between the pictures, description, and title. Either way, I'm pretty sure that gap in the 8.8 housing is normal and it certainly doesn't look broken given the clean edges. I suspect the chunk missing is from the bearing race that fell out when you pulled the diff assembly.

Yeah that's clearly an 8.8 and not a D30. Your D30 is probably fine.

The race probably broke because you had too much preload on the bearings. Check it more carefully next time.

Lol, was just saying I put gears in both front and rear and found on the front housing the casting was broken where the bearing race sits against on the passenger side. Anywho picked up a replacement axle housing last night.

My money is on that missing notch being in the replacement axle as well as it looks too clean to be broken.

Holy wow those are expensive.

Surprised you didn't go with Eaton E-lockers front and rear with what you paid for ball joints.

If you cannot fix it with a hammer then it has to be an electrical problem.

LMAO! Ive been looking at the photos for days trying to figure out what you guys were talking about on the casting and I finely got it tonight. The detent in the casting above the axle seal is the oiler for the carrier bearing. It directs oil in the bearing from splash off the ring gear and bolts. Now how the race failed is beyond me...

You're not the only one. The OP has a way of confusing things. If his concern is the front axle, why the hell does he include pictures of, and start talking about his 8.8?
