Clanking with right turns

I could not locate any post to see if anyone has already addressed this issue.

92 YJ, makes clanking sound when turning to the right. Can feel it through the shifter. It is speed sensitive, not engine RPM dependent. Push in clutch, still makes the noise.
Turning back to center or left, no noise. Sounds like a fan hitting something metal. It is real obvious at lower speeds, such as when I was snow plowing today.

Any ideas? Have not found anything obvious.

I'm thinking bad ball joints. Does it do it without the plow mounted? Do you feel it in the steering wheel?

It does it with or without the plow.
To tell the truth, I don't know so I'll check later today to see if I can feel it in the steering wheel.
I can feel it through the shifter.

Yes, it does in both 2 and 4wd.
However, the vac switch in the front differential does not work and the fork is permanently attached. While the transfer case does engage/disengage, the fork demains in one position.

I don't feel it in the steering wheel. I feel it on the shifter and seemingly through the floor.

At the risk of sounding stupid, (or inexperienced), I am not sure about the "halfshaft". I called Quadratec, and they told me a halfshaft is the intermediate shaft. That does not make sense, as it does not have a U joint.
Do you call the U joint for the halfshaft the U joint between the passenger side axle and the outer stub shaft axle? (I got those names from Quandratec.)

Stub shaft is between the wheel bearings and the knuckle (all outside the differential housing). I believe the half shaft is between the knuckle and the vacuum joint thing inside the axle tube.

Easy way to eliminate anything else in the drive train is to pull the front drive shaft and drive it around in 2wd to see if the noise still happens. If it does not, put it in 4wd and see what happens. The vacuum should still actuate the joint and, if it IS the half shaft thing you will hear the noise and NOT feel it in the trans shifter.

Got it. The u joint therefore is between the stub shaft and half shaft.

Removing the front driveshaft would identify if it is the u joint. My vacuum mechanism stopped working before I bought the jeep, I have the fork in 4wd all the time.

The outer “stub shaft” is the spindle.

The right side of a YJ front axle is two piece, but by half-shaft I’m referring to the axle shaft(s) that gave ujoints

In what you described the R side ujoint is a highly likely issue

@fishadventure has got a lot of great advice.

Rather than remove the front "half shaft" and drive again. Visually inspect the U Joints near the knuckles. If you see red dust around them. They are junk. If the rubber dust seals are compromised, they are junk or very near it. With the front of the vehicle in the air rotate them while providing resistance. There should be no play in them. It is the same as checking any U joint. Also turn the wheels and check for the same play and resistance. There are two of them in your front diff. A left and a right. Do not assume it is either of them. Check them both. It could be either.

If you cannot fix it with a hammer then it has to be an electrical problem.

Boojo35, thanks, I like that procedure. In the cold and with the plow needing to be used it seems at the exact time I have time to take her apart, lifting the front end seems easiest. I know changing the U joint is not the easiest of tasks, but at least I might know what is the problem.
