Changed transmission fluid - Wow!!

I didnít have a problem with the shifting to begin with. I changed the fluid because who knows how old the crap is in this thing. The foulest smelling chocolate milk looking junk that came out... yikes!! I replaced it with Red Line MT-90 and wow!!! Amazing!!!! Great stuff. Iíll never use anything else. It shifts like a new transmission!

That was one of the things I did Day 1 when I got mine since I never trust the diligence of a previous owner. It was dark as can be and looked like I was panning with gold with all of the brass flecks in it. Still not as smooth shift but it did get better with some MT90.

How often should you change the fluid? Iíve been running 10W-30 in my AX-15 for years now but being in Phoenix has me wanting something thicker.

Yep I’m doing mine tomorrow, just got my MT90 order yesterday. Hoping to have similar results.

I really don't know. I guess it all depends on your driving habits. I've only had this Jeep for a few weeks and have zero idea how old the fluids are. I've been changing everything and so far, I've been shocked to see how bad it all was.

Then go 10W-40.

Seriously. How hot does it get? Mine got hotter than a firecracker. I went with the synth 90 like above.

The heat here is another level. Hot is a poor word to use to describe it. I may just bump to 10W-40

The transmission will nearly burn your finger if you touch it.

Another +1 for MT-90. I had a pretty rough shift into 3rd gear with unknown fluid/age. Switched to MT-90 and it made a very noticeable difference smoothing everything out.

Went with MT-90 after a rebuild. This transmission will now outlast me

Should have gotten a tetanus shot with this jeep!

10w-40 vs 90 gear oils are completely different oils and tested under different methods. In some cases the 90wt may be thinner than motor oil and will include the high pressure additives required in the transmission. Stay with gear oil.

I love the look, colour, texture, taste and scent of my ATF +4 ....

It also shines up and protects plastic components like nothing else.

Stop whining about the 'ride' - If your YJ ain't wrangling your soul free, then might I suggest you buy a stationwagon... at least you can fit all your bull**** in the back.

Keep close tabs on the manufacturer specs. Lots of transmissions (unlike rear axles) have brass/bronze synchros. Not all lubes (including rear axle lubes) play well with yellow metals.

IIRC many of us gave you fair warning.

Then again, you're much closer to Moab...
