Broken Axle?

I was out wheeling the other day and I heard a loud snap come from my front axle. Now I have no front wheel drive in 4WD.. Could I have broken my front axle shaft?

Going to take it apart later tonight.

Its a open D30 up front.

Thanks.

It could be the axle shaft but I would picture some heavy noise comming from up front if this were the case... You may have broken the 4wd shift fork. If it is an axle shaft I would imagine it is the inner shaft but again you would have to pull it open to know for sure. I recon a shift fork may be the culperate.

Thank you for the quick response. I was thinking that as well. There is no noise coming from the front at all, feels exactly the same, just no 4WD. Thanks again.

Depending on where it snapped it could ride completely normal with no noise or vibes. Especially if you snapped an outer. You need to pull them and check because if you popped an outer, your unit bearings days are numbered if you keep driving it.

Your limited slip differential sucks.

Have you checked your front axle universals? With a open diff in the front I would think one of them would go before the axle shaft.

93 YJ SOA 2" springs front, XJ springs rear w/main leaf added, High pinon 9 inch rear detroit locker front Dana 44 ARB 4.56 Gears, 36 inch Irok tires too much to list.

nothing would make a shift fork break.

if it were a ujoint it would be completely obvious and with unit bearings un-drivable, unless you wrap it in duck tape to keep it from grinding whats left of the yoke ears together. that would get you home in 2wd. typically you pull the shaft and freewheel.

on a dana 30 the shafts are so small ive twisted off more splines then damaged ujoints. the idea that the joint will go first is an internet myth.

with a shaft twisted off at the splines you will experience nothing out of the ordinary in 2wd. in 4wd it will do exactly as you are experiencing. mine would make a quiet "ping" sound when breaking.

Haven't opened it up yet. Bought a set of dana44's front and rear for it instead. 4.56 gearing and detroit locked rear. both for 450 and they're already set up for leaf spring suspension
