95 yj 2.5l Ax5 .. Will go into 5th gear but no acceleration

I have a 95 yj with the ax5 I can shift through all the gears and all but once I shift into 5th there is no acceleration after that it will hold a speed of about 45mph .. Anyone have any suggestions, I know 5th gear is a common problem in the ax5

Welcome to the forum.

Are you saying that you can drive in 5th gear, but it just won't accelerate? If so, what RPM are you at?

The main problem with 5th gear is that the e-clip holding it in place, either breaks or falls out. Then the gear slips away, and it's like being in neutral. I've had that happen to me once on the highway. I just shifted into 4th and drove the 70 miles back home.

Yes I can put it into 5th gear and it engages the gear but does nothing. I will be in 4th doing 55 and put it into 5th and it will hold 55 mph for a bit but will drop to about 45 mph and stay there. It isn’t acting as if is in neutral

what size tires do you have? If larger than stock, lots of us on here jut forget about 5th.....
Also what RPM are you shifting at? These little engines are not very powerful and if shifted at too low a RPM it lugs on the engine and thats bad for it..

I usually don't bother with 5th unless I'm going downhill and dont shift to it until probably 65.
