8.8 swap into YJ

Dana 35 is blown. Too expensive to rebuild, found a ford 8.8 for 450. No picture. Do these things have spring mount perches or do I need to get those welded on? And also how the the driveshaft/yoke/ u joint work out? How does it bolt up? I know the ford 8.8 doesn't have a yoke.

your existing spring pads meed to be cut off and moved, to line up with the width of your rear springs. shock mounts to. there are a lot of threads on forum describing all aspects of swap, mounts, brakelines, e-brake cables, ect.ect. yoke is easy to find, if the stock yoke on the 8.8 is still bolted to the drive flange you can use it.

Assuming you have an 8.8 from an explorer or mountaineer....

Yes they come with spring plates. Yes you will have to reuse them or buy new and relocate them.

The 8.8 has an adaptor flange or you can buy new aftermarket flanges. You can also find it used on rangers.

Do you have the time to go to a junk yard? Might be able to get a better deal.

The 8.8 Consolidation Thread (a sticky at the top of the forum!) is the best place to start:

After buying my junkyard 8.8 AND doing all the work to get it ready AND buying all the parts to get it ready (to include brakes), I might have come out better with this:

Just something to consider...

Yeah count up your build costs and let me know. Mine was by far cheaper the ECGS once I was done.
$175 JY axle
$200 welding cost
$1200 regear and locker
$200 brakes and e brake
$100 misc stuff

Once it was all done I had some hours of pure fun and entertainment cleaning, painting and installing. Priceless

It's a great mod either way good luck and you will love it

I am a DIY kind and I am good at working around cash.... My last 8.8 cost 100 bucks it came with newer brakes on both the Ebrake and disc. Also came with newer calipers and hoses. All this from a U pull it JY.
I lef the adapter on the flange and just pounded out the U joint.
I used the 8.8 U bolts(dont argue about that, its been said already) and a set of chevy rear axle plates that came with the axle.
I cut the perches off and bought some cheap perches at a speed shop for 18 bucks.
Conversion U joint that is 100% in stock at every place in town 10 bucks. 15 for a set of nickle rods to weld the case to the tubes and a few feet of mig wire to weld the perches....
all for less than 150 including gas to get there.
I am about to repeat this again this week....
I think I need to start building a few at time so I can sell one to pay for the cost of both...

And get this the JY will lower price if you buy a bunch of stuff.....

I just checked out that ECGS one and adding all the stuff to it came out to 2400. If you are gonna drop that much at once just save for a D60 and pick up a used 35 to run for a while. IMO. I picked up my 8.8 for 100, ruffstuff swap kit for 100, locker and cover for 250, just have to get all the work done and figure out my brake lines but thats well under 2.4k! Just my 2 cents

I like my YJ how I like my whiskey, on the rocks with just a touch of color!

$300- for my axle
$350- for the misc(perches, upper and lower shock mounts, new pads/rotors, brake lines, renting a welder, etc)
$705- for an ARB locker
$500 for a super 88
$120 for a ubolt flip

I've got near $2k in mine, but it is near unbreakable on 33's , and it is a fairly sweet axle to boot.
