35x12.50 R15's on stock rims -- what could go wrong?

For one thing I am pretty sure that these tires have been put on the Jeep without a lift kit. So clearance is an issue.

Turn radius is another .. the tires rub on the spring. That is super annoying.

That said, what I am really struggling with is understanding what I have been reading about regarding the rear axle being stressed by the 35's. What forces are in play and why are the tires putting stress on the axle? If 35's are too big then what is the max tire size if everything in the drivetrain is stock?

I do have to shift out of 5th while on the highway to keep from dropping in speed.

The rear axle shafts and ring-and-pinion experience a ~50% or more in simple leverage increases from the larger tire size.
The axles and R&P are somewhat adequate for the 215-75-15s stock tires but general consensus is that it’s weaknesses show up readily off road with tire sizes above 33”. (I feel I was fortunate to go almost 300K miles with my D35 with all the towing I did but it was 2.5/4-cyl and so it never experienced much heavy torque.)

As far as stock wheels and 35s: depending on year stock wheels are 6-1/2” or 7”. I don’t think there was a factory 8”? - not sure. Anyway, a 12.50 tire wants an 8” to 10” wheel. On a jeep I think 8” provides adequate width and tire profile benefits. I don’t know of any steel 8-1/2” wheels for a jeep. I looked s year or two ago.

A 12.50 on a 7” wheel is going to balloon and center-ride toomuch imho - and not be nice off road or on road (my 11.50s on 7” are too ballooned for my taste but they've worked ok)

Too narrow a rim also causes the tire to buldge and causes steering clearance issues. Something like a 10" rim has sufficient offset to place the additional width of the tire toward the outside thereby allowing more clearance between the tire and frame.

When I bought my heep I did a long search for info on the stock axles. I found a web site with the Dana specs, it gave the max tire size for the 30 is 33" and for the 35 the max tire size is 31". I've been wheeling with 32's for 11 years with no problems, BUT I don't have stock shafts or carrier, I'm careful with wheel spin and not concerned about pulling cable. That being said I have a 8.8 in the garage that I hope to have installed by the spring.

That size tire on a narrow wheel:

1. Looks retarded.
2. Exposes the sidewall to sharp rocks.

I believe the stock wheels are 7", 8 - 8.5" is about perfect in my opinion for a 12.5, 10" is too wide and is more apt to bead loss when aired down under about 12 psi (especially so on aluminum wheels).

The D35 is just weak in general. I personally would not put any money toward trying to strengthen it when there are far superior options available for the same or less money.

I was born in Moore, went to High School in Midwest City, lived in Mustang before moving back to CA in the late 90's. My mom and sister both live in El Reno.

Sweet. My wife and I have been in Oklahoma since 1998 and we love it here. A relative inexpensive cost of living and college football .. life is good.
