Measure the physical size, find one that will fit in the same space with the highest Cold Cranking Amps (CCA) you can find. My battery is 850cca.

Go to any auto store site, put in your vehicle information, and waalaa, magic. Or even better magic is look at what your current battery says.

My 01 XJ takes 800CCA according to the book, may go a bit bigger if it draws a lot while using my XRC 9,500Lb winch.

I think you can fit a type-34 battery if you get a battery tray from a 97+ XJ
Don't quote me on that though, do some research as IIRC its a pretty common mod

IIRC, the earlier XJs came stock with a 58, 97-01s came with a 34 or 34/78.
