xj airbag removal?

hello

I am posting for a friend so please forgive my profile information not giving you the correct vehicle to look at while deciding how to help.

My friend has a 95 XJ which only has a drivers side airbag. Now the trick of it is that he wants to remove the airbag for those off roading cases where if he hits a tree he doesn't want it to deploy. We also live in the great state of New Jersey to where if their is an airbag light he will not pass inspection.

Is their a way to disconnect the airbag or remove it completely but not have it throw a code that would hinder him from passing inspection.

all help is greatly appreciated.
thank you.

The air bag in 95-96 are purely mechanical no electronics what so ever so there is no air bag light. I don't know of anyone having a problem with air bags deploying off road unless it was warranted. The is anothr post in here from just a day ago that describes the procedure. You don't have to remove it just disarm it with the screw on top of the steering wheel.

just pop the plug on top of the steering column and back the screw out (iirc it's a torx). make sure to stand outside the jeep and look through the windshield in case it goes off.

I would leave it in there unless its a trail rig. It's very rare to deploy under normal off road stuff.

I'm forever grateful to Speedycat and RnEmOvr for their generosity
