Will not down shift

Dear all:

I was climbing a hill 2 days ago, noticed my 2000 XJ Classic A/T ( AW4 ) will not down shift from 3 to 2 when pressing on gas pedal, anyone knows what is the cause, I appreciate your help.

might want to start with a scan for trans codes.

When I see the price of OEM I think aftermarket.
When I see the quality of aftermarket I think OEM.

Maybe check the shiftdown cable, it goes from the throttle to the transmission.

Thank you for your replies, good ideas
I don't have a way to read trans code.
I will check oil level and smell.

That is NOT a kickdown cable. It's a Throttle Valve cable that increases line pressure inside the trans when the throttle is opened. the shifts are controlled electronically.

The trans is supposed to be drained and refilled every 30,000 miles. Ever done it?

Just remove the plug, drain it, reinstall theplug and fill lit. Takes about a gallon. Use only Dex/Merc 3 fluid. Available everywhere.

lets start - does the CEL come on @3seconds then go out at every start?

Did you try key on off trick to get codes?

you can get free scans at many auto part stores....

You had not thought to check fluid until above suggestion?

Simple and basic are good things.
First thing I do on a "new to me" vehicle is check all the fluid levels and condition......

I posted 2 replies, don't see them on the thread, so I am posting again,
I changed Tranny oil, it was more like brown, smells burned, soft dirt was accumulated on the 2 magnets inside the pan.
I used Mopar ATF4, hope that is recommended. I will drive it this morning and post the results.

Unfortunately, you used the wrong fluid.

Use Dex/Merc.

AGREE with above.
AND he advised you four days ago what fluid to use!!

from owners manual!!
Mopar Dexron IIE/Mercon is the recommended fluid for the AW-4 automatic transmissions.

When I see the price of OEM I think aftermarket.
When I see the quality of aftermarket I think OEM.

So I made a bobo, sorry not to pay attention to your note. I will replace it tomorrow, do I have to flush or just put the new oil

What will the wrong oil have an effect on the tranny on long term basis?.

Long term at this point, you're fine. drain and refill 2 times, driving the Jeep for a few days in between.
