What axles came stock in a 99 XJ 4.0? Other axle related questions too..

Auto trans, if it matters. I've decided to modify this thing, I want to lift it and put larger tires on it and blah blah blah. While I am doing that, I wanted to beef up the axles to handle the strain of larger tires and off road abuse. I have no interest whatsoever in rock crawling, flexing, or any of that. I want to play in the mud! Anyways, what gear ratio should I go with if I am going to put 31" tires on? How do I correct my speedometer for the change in tire size and gear ratio? Thanks guys!

the 99 should have came with a D30 front axle and 8.25 rear.

the gears should be 353 unles you have the towing package then i believe it was 373

for 31's i would probably go with 4.10's or 4.11's you wont need anything too low actually your factory gears maybe ok as far as your speedo use google there are a couple different products out there that fix that for ya i think www.quadratec.com has a few on their site you can check out.

hope this helps

I'm nearly sure you have d30 and c8.25's.. a good way to tell is if your rear diff has a square bottom.. its a c8.25

The dana 35 was used in every year of XJ, anything from 91-up can have either the dana 35, or the chrysler 8.25. From 96-down the chrysler 8.25 will be 27 splined axles, from 96.5-up they are 29 splined axles. The 96's will be hit or miss on the spline count and the only way to verify is to pull an axle and count. The gear ratio's for your model will be 3:55 to 1 for the automatics, and 3:07 to1 for the manual. 4:10 to 1 for a 4cyl. model. Using axles from the 4cyl. would be the best option for going to 4:10 gears which are perfect for 31" tires, and you can change the speedo gear to correct the speedometer.http://jeepin.com/features/speedogear/index.asp

All Cherokees sold in North America have a Dana 30 front axle. The rear axle needs to be identified by its shape. Stamping and factory axle tags are usually unreadable or long gone.
