Wacky fuel gauge after fuel pump replaced

Hello,
Just had to have the fuel pump replaced in my 95 XJ.
Now my gauge is out of whack.
When showing just under a quarter tank, it only took 5 gallons to fill it up, and then it had dropped down below quarter full after one day.

I anticipate it only needing 5 or so gallons again when I go to fill it up.

The shop noticed while installing it and they say they tested it and it was working properly (I still need to ask *how* they tested it).

What's more likely, a 24 yr old gauge starting to fail right at this moment, or a bad sending unit in the new pump?
Or something else...?

TIA
Steve

You have a 20 gallon tank so it is showing 5 gallons instead of 15 gallons.

The float is mounted below the fuel pump on a long thin metal arm but is removed with the fuel pump for service.

It is POSSIBLE thet the arm was bent doing this and is now hanging lower.

On older Jeeps we have to calibrate the arm and adjusting tabs to get them to read right, not sure the XJ has this.

From the 1994 XJ TSM:
Empty 105 ohms
1/2 full 33 ohms
Full 5 ohms

If you have a small resistance somewhere, it could also read low.

So, over the last few fill ups, with the needle between "E" and the warning light, it took all of 7 gallons to fill it up.
And of course, the gauge reads 3/4 full...

I think you may be right about them having bent the float arm... Much more likely than the gauge being faulty (but I may be able to rig a test to see...)
